Apart from fishing what is your favourite hobby?
Treasure Quest just gave me a Computer a couple of days ago so I suppose that's my main hobby at the moment. Obviously working out but I think that's a bit boring. Everybody knows that one its nothing special. Any actress, unless they are playing a large women has to work out.
Are their any CD ROM titles on the horizon, apart from Treasure Quest that is?
Yeah, Harbinger - Its really great. I haven't had a chance to play it yet but they showed me a clip from it. The graphics are really amazing.
Are their any movie opportunities on the horizon?
Not at the moment as the timetable is too demanding. I'm reading a lot of scripts but nothings come up yet.
Do you think you will be in a DS9 movie if there is going to be one?
Yeah definitely. I'll do the whole movie thing. I hope that there will be a movie. I think that what paramount are going to do is look at how the new film does without the Kirk, Spock and the others.
Do you think that you will continue to act in DS9 until the very end of it?
Yes I most certainly do. I think that after playing Dax for four years I think that it would be quite difficult to continue without her. Obviously the conventions and the Trekkies keep the character alive. Its quite interesting that you should ask that because only the other day I was talking with Arman Shimerman. It seams like only last week we were filming the first season and after only two more series it will be all over.
So do you quite often actively participate in Conventions?
Yeah, its our own form of fan-dom. Its unique to Star Trek. Its something that we all love. I like to go to as many as I can but often they ask us to do them in the middle of filming or as I am attempting to make other films. Its not always Practical.
Have you heard about the Generations II convention in the Royal Albert Hall?
The big event for you guys over there. No I hadn't, I wish I could go for it. Any excuse to come back to England. A couple of years before Deep Space Nine, I came over for six months. I fell in love with your country.
Do you think that Dax will ever fall in love again, properly, after Rejoined?
I wish she would hurry up and do it. I mean I have only had three love interests. In the first series she flirted with Basher. I had that guy in Meridian, I think that was series three and now Lenara in Season Four. I supposed there wasn't anything in series two. It seams that Kira steals all of the love stories.
It seams the Kira and Odo thing is being played more now?
Yeah, I think that it might be developed a little further in the future. I'm not quite sure how yet though.
Is the Official Internet Fan Club really official?
It isn't really official no. I recently went to a Computer convention for Treasure Quest. While there they showed me the Pages. I was incredibly flattered. I mean to be able to program it all in just for me. But its not official no.
Do you have much input on the way that your character will develop?
Not really. I can't really make any scripted changes. I can only add a couple of things on the spot. Like the flirtation with Worf. I decided to add that in. You can pretty much do what you want. If it doesn't work then you soon know as they are on the phone to you. If it works then they start scripting it in. Like in this case they have now started adding in the things automatically. When we first started in the first season, I decided that somebody who had lived for seven lifetimes would probably have to be quite sarcastic. I got the idea from Spock. It seamed the Dax had a lot of Spock's qualities. I had a coach at the time, Coach Vora Chabic. She helped me ad-lib with a couple of Sarcastic comments. I soon picked it up and have been using it right through. I think that it is one thing that is very vital to Dax's view on life. Life would appear a bit drab if there wasn't a way to find humour the seventh time around. It would be a serious case of bin there done that, not doing it again. She kind of has a Q like quality. She doesn't have to care as she can outlive all of the people around her. However she can't vanish in a puff of smoke. Dax has to be able to change quite easily. For a while I was quite wary as in one of the episodes Dax moves the furniture around in Odo's quarters. He is absolutely against it, I think that they should play up Dax's mischievous streak.
Is John P. Farrell in any way related to you?
Oh JP. Yeah, he is a nice man. No relation but hey that would be neat Uncle John. I'll have to tell him that.
Do you prefer Modelling or Filming?
Filming, otherwise I wouldn't be doing it today. This is the place that I think I made the biggest mistake of my life. When I was younger I slammed a door on the modelling business. All of my theatre friends were saying that to keep doing modelling would put a damper on my acting carrier. Obviously my modelling agent didn't agree but I was from Iowa and I didn't know. I was only twenty and I wasn't looking far enough down the road. Just look at Andy McDowel, she still does modelling. You probably can't even remember the last commercial she did. It certainly hasn't dampened her carrier. This probably was one of the biggest mistakes of my life. There have been some other ones but I'm not going to tell you those.
Are you going to do, are you in the process of or already done the Making of DS9?
Yeah, I have filmed it. I actually have a copy of it here in the house. It may not be out in England yet but it is defiantly out over here. In that one I just walk around the station dressed as myself. However, in another video I recently did for Paramount's Museum of TV In that one I play Dax. I'm talking about paramount. I was very honoured to be selected as the representative of Science Fiction.
Did you watch Star Trek as a child?
Yes I did, I know that this is going to sound very cutesy. In the playground at school this guy called Grant, I can't remember his last name. He would be Kirk and I would be the Alien Chick who he would rescue.
Was there an actor influence in your family?
No, I suppose I was lucky and a bit insane.
What was the first acting you did?
I first acted in Paper Dolls.
Do you find it annoying and time consuming (boring) to put on your makeup at the start of each working day? How long does it take?
I had a great advantage. In the original makeup test they put a prosthetic forehead on me. This was because in one of the Next Generation episodes ("Host") the trill had this forehead. They decided that it looked very ugly. They remembered that when Franke Jansoen had been in an episode she had been warring spots which they thought looked really sexy. They had previously offered Franke Jansoen the place of Dax but I think she asked to for too much money. I suppose that's why they thought of it. But I'll go for anything that will make me look as good as her.
And finally the most voted readers question is what is your favourite soft drink?
[PAUSE] What's my favourite soft drink? Yes. It's really boring but, Diet Coke.
Oh we overhear all drink Regular Coke. (Well we do! Ed.).
I like that but I have to regulate my sugar levels as I'm hyper-glysemic. However my major fall down in that respect is ice-cream.
Thanks for the Interview.
Thank you.
