Stars as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in The Next Generation. Stewart was born on July 13 in the English town of Mirfield. He appeared in such BBC productions as I, Claudius; Smiley's People; and Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. He was also in the American-made films Dune, Exalibur, and Lifeforce. He has done a lot of stage work, and is considered one of the leading talents on the British stage where he has played such notable characters as Shylock, Henry IV, Leontes, King John, and Titus Andronicus. Stewart has also done directing on TNG, including the episodes "Hero Worship," "In Theory," and "A Fistful of Datas." Stewart was very surprised to learn, in 1992, that TV Guide readers voted him "sexiest man of the year." He only wished it had happened before he lost his hair at the age of 19. He has worn wigs most of his life, but the Star Trek producers decided that he looked good without and apparently that didn't deter the voters either. He lives in Los Angeles. Stewart's son, Daniel Stewart, appeared with him in the episode "The Inner Light" as his (and Kamin's) son, Batai.
